Laza – Gamarvan (24.4 km / 15.2 mi) +1995m/-2251m (E → W)

This stage climbs directly out of Laza into forest and transitions quickly into open alpine terrain, following pastoral routes beneath Peygəmbər bulağı before crossing into a more isolated valley system. The route includes extended off-trail sections, broad ridge traverses, and a long descent into Gamarvan through forest. It combines some of the most scenic terrain in the section with some of its most ambiguous navigation.

Trail conditions

The route consists of old trails through forests and pastures/grazing paths, as well as untracked or faint terrain. There is no formal maintenance on this route.

Expected footfall is very low. Outside of pasture zones, you are unlikely to encounter other hikers.

Water

  • Reliable sources:
    • Peygəmbər bulağı (Prophet’s Spring)
    • Streams feeding into the Hamzalıchay valley
    • Intermittent smaller springs along pasture zones
  • Notes:
Spacing between sources can vary depending on route choice and season.
Treat all water. Livestock presence is common.

Trail access

Laza village (road access, food and basic services available)
Gamarvan village (road access, food options available)

There are no other bailout options. Some valley exits may lead toward lower settlements, but these are not straightforward or marked.

This stage enters a border-controlled zone.

Trail amenities

  • Laza:
    Multiple cafes/restaurants
  • Gamarvan:
Several cafes/restaurants, locally known for outdoor cooking vloggers
  • On trail:
    No formal amenities

Cultural notes

Both Laza and Gamarvan are predominantly Lezgin villages. The former shares its name with the well-known Laza of Gusar and is said to have been settled by migrants from its northern counterpart many centuries ago. Beyond these villages, the landscape is very seasonal, with temporary shepherd camps and grazing areas defining movement. Gamarvan has gained local recognition for its outdoor cooking vloggers, which is reflected in the presence of roadside cafes, while Laza functions as a more established mountain access point.
