Gakh, Azerbaijan
A guide to 60km (2-3 days) of hiking on the Transcaucasian Trail
This guide will help you plan a self-supported hike along a 61 km section of the Transcaucasian Trail that passes through the Gakh region of Azerbaijan, consisting of three stages. Below, you will find practical information and trail notes, plus links to interactive maps and downloadable GPS data to help navigate the route.
This section of the TCT leads you through the grandiose landscapes of Gakh, through its dense forests, rugged ridgelines, and open panoramic landscapes that reveal layered peaks and ridges of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. From the picturesque village of Gashgachay, the trail ascends into remarkable alpine pastures, and toward the historic town of Ilisu, from which continues an even more demanding trek to Mamrukh village in Zagatala. You’ll traverse highland pastures, navigate challenging climbs, and pass through cultural and historic settlements representative of the country’s remarkable ethnolinguistic diversity.
Quick Facts:

The Gakh section of the TCT is one of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of the route in Azerbaijan. Expect steep climbs through rocky terrain and dense forests, leading to breathtaking alpine pastures and historical landmarks such as the mountaintop Shamil Fortress and the ancient town of Ilisu.
Trail conditions vary by season. After heavy rains, the path may become overgrown, especially in forested and grassy areas. While frequently used by shepherds and their animals, some sections can be difficult to follow, so we strongly recommend downloading and familiarizing yourself with the GPS tracks before setting out. Water sources can be scarce, though springs are often found near shepherd shelters; however, do not rely on them as a guaranteed supply.
The trail between Gashgachay and Ilisu was originally marked by the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, but many signposts have been removed since the last maintenance.
This route does not pass through major cities, but small markets can be found in villages along the way, and Ilisu offers a selection of local restaurants. While Ilisu is accessible via asphalt roads, reaching Gashgachay and Mamrukh requires travel on unpaved roads.
