Khinalig – Laza (Gabala)

KHLA

Khinalig – Laza (of Gabala): 42km, +1945m/-2800m (E → W)

This long and challenging route traverses the remote highlands between Khinalig and Laza (Gabala) along some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Greater Caucasus. The trail crosses high ridgelines, deep valleys, and vast alpine pastures, reaching a maximum elevation of 3,236 meters before descending into the river valleys below. The route is demanding, with steep ascents, multiple river crossings, and unpredictable terrain conditions, particularly near the Gudyalchay River Valley. Hikers should be prepared for rapid weather changes, difficult water crossings, and exposed high-altitude conditions.

Trail conditions

This is a remote and physically demanding trek, requiring experience with steep climbs, high-altitude hiking, and river crossings. The highest sections are fully exposed, with no natural shelter, making weather conditions a major factor. The river crossings, particularly at the Gudyalchay and Demiraparan Rivers, can be dangerous during periods of high water.

While the trail follows some well-defined paths, sections near Salavat Ashirimi and the river valleys may require careful navigation due to erosion and seasonal conditions. GPS is strongly recommended, as wayfinding can be difficult.

Water

  • No reliable water sources between Khinalig and Salavat Ashirimi—hikers should carry enough water for the first 23km.
  • Seasonal springs and rivers are present near Salavat Ashirimi and Gudyalchay Valley, but water clarity varies depending on weather conditions.
  • The final stretch before Laza passes multiple river crossings, where there are also several migrating animal herds. Make sure to use filters if using non-spring water sources.
