Grizdehne – Griz

Grizdehne – Griz: 9.5km, +835m/-144m (E → W)
This historic trail, known as Eh Yolu, has been a key connection between Grizdehne and Griz for generations, winding through forests, steep ascents, and offering incvredible canyon views. However, due to erosion and steep inclines, the trail has become increasingly difficult to traverse. Since 2023, TCT trail crews have been working to restore and improve the route, making it more accessible for hikers while preserving its historic significance. The Azerbaijan Tourism Board has also marked this route, although several signposts have been removed since last maintenance. Some sections remain challenging, requiring careful footing and a steady pace.
Route description
Departing from Grizdehne, the trail begins with a short stretch of asphalt road, heading southwest past Panorama Hotel. After approximately 150 meters, the route veers off the road to the right (west), entering a forested section. The first kilometer is a gentle ascent through the trees, a shaded and scenic introduction to the hike.
You will reach an open meadow, after which the trail enters its most demanding section—a 2km steep and rocky climb up to the top of the canyon. This ascent is rugged and eroded in parts, requiring caution and balance. Hikers should be prepared for uneven terrain, particularly in wet or icy conditions. At the summit, the landscape opens up to canyon views and grassy ridgelines.
The path continues along a plateau known as Khak Kek, where it intersects with another trail. Here, keep left (south) and follow the canyon-side trail for the next 6km. This final stretch offers great views of the dramatic cliffs and valleys as you approach Griz village.
Trail conditions
The trail consists of forest paths, steep rocky inclines, and mountainside animal tracks. While TCT restoration efforts have improved some accessibility, several parts remain eroded and challenging, particularly the steep ascent after the forest. The Azerbaijan Tourism Board has marked the trail with blazes and waymarkers, but GPS tracking is always recommended.
