Budug – Grizdehne: 16km, +567m/-1016m (E → W)

This route connects Budug to Grizdehne, traversing the highland village to a long descent into the valley below. This route  climbs through the upper settlements of Budug before joining the the descent into Grizdehne. There is an alternative track that veers into Zeyid for those who wish to visit another unique settlement.

Route description

Leaving Budug, the trail follows jeep tracks ascending into the higher part of the village, passing through small hamlets and cultivated fields. As the elevation increases, the views open up to the surrounding mountain basins and distant ridgelines. After leaving the last of the village homes behind, the path continues along tracks through pastures before converging with the major descent into Grizdehne.

The descent begins with a long stretch of dirt road, which transitions into a more rugged track as it nears the valley floor. The final approach to Grizdehne is steep and exposed, with no shade for the last 11 kilometers, making early morning or late afternoon hiking advisable during warmer months. The route enters the village from the southeast side, where visitors will find restaurants and a small market.

Trail conditions

The route follows jeep tracks, herding paths, and dirt roads, with some sections less defined due to seasonal use. Though mostly open and exposed, navigation is straightforward, with GPS recommended to avoid any unintended detours. The terrain is a mix of moderate ascents and long, sustained descents, making it more demanding on the knees than the climb out of Budug.

Water

There are no reliable water sources along the route, so it is essential to stock up in Budug before setting out. Water is available in Grizdehne.

Trail access

Budug is accessible via off-road vehicles from Guba or by hiking from Sohub.

Grizdehne is well connected, with road access from Guba city and neighboring villages.

Trail amenities

There is no market in Budug, but a guesthouse is available for overnight stays.

Grizdehne has multiple restaurants, a small market, and guesthouses cater to travelers.

Alternate route

For those interested in a detour, the Zeyid route remains an alternative. This variation follows jeep tracks northwest from Budug to Zeyid (4.4km, +374m/-130m) before continuing on to Grizdehne. Zeyid is a small and unique village but has no market. However, visitors can arrange a homestay. This alternate route adds a cultural stop for those interested in visiting the unique village, but it is a longer and less direct option.

Cultural heritage sites

This route passes through the highland settlements of Budug, home to the Budugh ethnic group, one of the smallest linguistic groups in Azerbaijan.
