Stage Notes: Sohub – Budug

Sohub – Budug

MA-MI Profile

Sohub – Budug: 7.92 km, +641m/-516m (E → W)

This short but rugged route connects Sohub to Budug, two remote villages in the Guba highlands. Beginning in Sohub, the trail ascends past the historic Söhübqala fortress before navigating an old, partially eroded path through the mountains. The terrain includes a mix of jeep tracks, animal trails, and a river crossing. As you approach Budug, the final stretch follows a rocky ascent into the village.

Due to the unmarked and unclear nature of the trail, GPS navigation is highly recommended.

Route description

The trail begins in Sohub, where you follow jeep tracks northward, climbing steadily for about a kilometer until reaching a set of perpendicular tracks. From here, the path briefly veers east before ascending towards Söhübqala fortress from the southern side. Nearing the top, the route bends west before looping back east to descend from the north.

Once past the fortress, the trail becomes less distinct, continuing northwestward along the remnants of an old road. Though much of the original pathway has eroded, scattered rocks still mark the way for hikers. Around kilometer 5.5, the route descends into a riverbed, where you’ll need to cross before picking up a wide set of animal paths on the other side. These trails gradually lead to a clearer footpath, which takes you up a rocky ascent into the village of Budug.

Trail conditions

The trail follows a mix of jeep tracks, old road remnants, and animal paths. Expect steep ascents, a river crossing, and unmarked sections where navigation may be difficult. GPS tracking is essential, especially in open areas where the path fades.
